
The countryside town of Polis obtained its name from the Greek word for city It is the shortened version of Polis Chrysochou which in Greek means "the City of the Golden Land", due to fertile land surrounding the Chrysochou River. The picturesque town does not possess large hotels and tourist attraction, it has retained a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere.
The centre square in Polis is one of its main features, boasting cobbled streets, a bank, chemists, jewellers, souvenir shops, bars and traditional restaurants serving home baked cuisine.
For those who like to explore by foot there are numerous walks available in the area, such as the trail of Aphrodite and Adonis. The famous Baths of Aphrodite can be found nearby, where legend has it that the mythological Goddess of Love and Beauty bathed with her lover Adonis. It is said that should you bath in the waters of this serene grotto, you will be blessed with the gift of eternal youth and beauty.
During the months of spring the area enjoys an array of colours from wild flowers, orange and lemon blossom, basil, wild lavender and poppies.
